At Tribe on the Beach, we're here to stop you doing anything too extraordinary! Beach backpacker life in the turquoise Caribbean is simply not like that.
Lounging with locals and a glass of wine in crystal clear cenote/springs,
BBQing at sunset on our garden terrace,
Playing with our super-friendly dogs, Tequila Boom Boom, Lupo Luppolo and Betty Bup,
Tanning a gorgeous bronze colour over a beer
... these are the things that we're about.
We're in 'the heart of the beautiful Mayan Riviera', looking out towards Isla Cozumel, and this richly historical Caribbean Sea.
The city has beautiful archaeology right on our doorstep for the casual stroller, or a short bus ride for the adventurous, culture buff. There's ancient Spanish and Mayan villages, traditional ceremonies, spiritual experiences, live music , skydiving, diving with sharks, swimming, snorkeling coral reefs, amazing cave diving, and fabulous restaurants and nightlife. Then there are group trips to clubs, restaurants, springs, archaeological sites, pubs, and the beaches as well as Mexican dinners (on our terrace or at the beach) and, never to be missed, Georgian poetry readings.
There's coffee every morning as the Sun rises directly in front of the hostel. The Mayans sunbathed here; the Spanish bathed, the Americans and Australians do, um, American and Australian things. Life really hasn't changed much in 3,000 years and you will do what they did. But, we have free WiFi, as well. We really are here to stop you doing anything extraordinary!
Our air-conditioned rooms are doused in the sun 16 hours a day, every day of the year! When you arrive you'll get fresh linen, a secure place for your possessions, a cosy bed, clean bathrooms, sassy social socializing spots, help with your bookings, travel plans, and excursions. You really won't regret staying with us!
We're 40 minutes by bus from Cancun International Airport, and you can reach us easily (and cheaply) from Tulum, Holbox, Mujeres, Bacalar, Merida, Campeche, Mauhaul and Cozumel. Ferries stop right outside our door, buses 2 minutes away.
Then, sitting with friends, a wine and a BBQ, watching the sun dip over the city, you'll appreciate this irony... at Tribe, the sun never truly sets!

It pains me to write a negative review of this hostel because the owner Shawn seems very nice and genuinely invested in making the hostel great.
Pros: good location close to ferry, nice terrace.
Cons: cleanliness - the hostel isn't a mess but it isn't clean either.
The location while close to the pier is about a 30 minute walk away from a swimmable beach due to seaweed. And the smell isn't great either, not the hostels fault though.
Atmosphere isnt anything to write home about either

The bathrooms at this property were quite dirty, and the bathroom in the private room was extremely filthy, and shower knobs weren’t working. Almost everything was rusted, all of the soap dispensers were either empty, or were filled with moldy soap.
The common area was decent, it was still a nice place to interact with the other people at the hostel.
The rooms were extremely basic.
The location was pretty great, pretty much right on the beach.
The employees and owner were very friendly and helpful.
Finding the hostel initially, when going to checkin was very confusing, as the door we needed to go into isn’t labeled at all. The only way to know how to get there is to read the email instructions very carefully, otherwise it’s impossible to find.

Ate staff was very nice and helpful. However, the hostel itself was very dirty, especially the bathroom was in a horrible shape. Kitchen was small with only one cooker working out of 4. I’ve stayed in many hostels but this was definitely the worst one. I wouldn’t go again.
